Tips for Success
One tip that I would offer new international students starting their program at UVic is... Explore the city, join new clubs, try new things! Do as many things outside of your comfort zone, this is a great period for self-discovery, learning and growth.
One of the best ways for international students to get connected during their time at UVic would be… Just to simply put yourself out there. Say hi to your classmates, join that club that you’re unsure about, volunteer with that organization that aligns with your passion… You never know what you’ll get out of these experiences you hold yourself back from until you try. There are also more than just the 4 walls of a classroom. Yes, your grades are important but there are endless possibilities outside of the classroom to build connections and grow personally. You’d be surprised about how many other students are on the same boat as you looking for connections in a new environment, so go out there and give it a shot.
Oh, and I’ve heard that the Global Community hosts some great events too, so that’s definitely something to check out! 😊
Student Success Tip: Utilize all the academic, personal support and resources offered at UVic! Email your professors, go to their office hours, chat with you teaching assistants, volunteer for events… the list is endless! Everyone here wants you to succeed and everyone will try to their best effort to help make that happen, but the first step will start with you in reaching out.
About
I recently moved across the country from Toronto to Victoria. I’m a proud UWaterloo alumnus who found a passion of working with and mentoring students during my time there as a student and getting involved. I’ve worked at different universities across Canada in varying roles supporting both domestic and international students, creating programming that enhances student engagement and experiences. I’m excited to support international students at UVic, helping them build connections with their community and making an ever-lasting impact during their time here.
Interests
Trying different cultural cuisines, backpacking through Europe, golfing, NBA, early 2000’s pop rock, a good meme won’t hurt.
Fun fact
During my undergraduate ³Ô¹ÏÍø, I’ve switched programs about 3 times so it’s definitely alright to explore your options and figure out what’s right for you during your time at UVic!
