Mailman mailing lists

You can use UVic's Mailman server to create and manage electronic mailing lists. These lists have been used for newsletters, clubs and communities of practice.

The future of Mailman

The server software, Mailman 2, was first released in 2002. Active development ended in 2020. It's still getting critical security updates, but no new features or bug fixes. We don't have an immanent plan to end or replace this service, but we anticipate that we'll have to.

Meanwhile, there are far more options for online newsletters and communities than there were when we launched it. For example:

  • Our email system supports distribution groups for internal communications.
  • Brightspace has better messaging tools for courses.
  • Teams provides a more robust platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Commercial platforms like Slack have become popular choices for regional, national and global communities.
If you want to create a newsletter or online community and aren't working with personal or sensitive data, there are probably better choices. Contact us if you'd like to discuss your options.

Create and manage a mailing list

Before you create a mailing list, contact IT support. We can help determine if a Mailman mailing list is the best option for you based on your needs and goals or if we recommend something better.

It takes approximately 48 hours to create the list and provision it with your class list. You will receive an email from mailman-owner@lists.uvic.ca. It will contain the admin password for accessing your list and several URLs for maintaining your list.

It is very important that you retain this email for your reference. It includes the administration web address specific to the course where you complete many actions, including configuration of the mailing list and sending messages to the list.

If you don't see the email, check your junk email folder as well as your inbox. If it's been over 48 hours, you've checked your junk email folder and you still haven't received an email, contact us for help. For faster service, send us the name of the mailing list and the email address you used to create it.

Replace the italicized text with the name of the mailing list or your email address.
